Churches Hold Block Party To Support North Tulsa Tornado Victims

NewsOn6.com - Tulsa, OK - News, Weather, Video and Sports - KOTV.com |

A north Tulsa community still is getting back on its feet after tornadoes tore through the area a few weeks ago. A group of churches held a block party for families in that neighborhood to help with the recovery.

Bag after bag of food and gifts were loaded into the Church of Eternal Love sanctuary on Saturday morning. The church miraculously was spared the night of March 30, when tornadoes touched down.

"So I am thankful, but I do utilize that same opportunity that we were blessed with to reach out to others," Church of Eternal Love Pastor Diana Serisis said.

Serisis and the congregations of at least 9 other churches decided to work together to help families still dealing with the effects of the storm and their neighbors.

They hosted a block party for the community and handed out a hot meal, provided groceries, a Mother’s Day gift and entertainment for the day.

"We came up here just to meet people, see what had happened, find out how we could help,” City Church Pastor Matt Nelson said. “We were able to get eight churches around Tulsa to say, ‘hey, we'll come up, throw a block party and provide for the needs and bless the community that's been through a rough time the last few weeks,’"

"The clean up here is far from over. Some homes were completely destroyed by the storm and line the streets up and down the 46th Street North corridor.

“There will be people coming for food, we've got legal advice, there are a lot of just resources available for them,” Nelson said.

Those resources will help this community move forward with repairs, living situations and getting the neighborhood back to normal.

Serisis says all that is happening, slowly but surely.

“If we all work collectively together, we can get it done,” she said.

21-Day Center Challenge

The Challenge of Walking by Faith

One of the greatest challenges for a follower of Jesus is that we are called to live by faith. Do you know what that means? Faith, according to Hebrews 11:1, is having confidence and hope in what we cannot see. It’s like being put in a pitch black room and listening to someone tell you which way to walk. In other words, as followers of Jesus, we are called to live and walk in the reality that we can’t always physically see with our eyes. That is quite a challenge sometimes, wouldn’t you say?

Do you believe that as you take a step of faith these next 21 days by centering your life on Christ, implementing new spiritual disciplines, and making commitments to grow - that God is doing something great inside you that you can’t always see?

Here are 3 realities you may or may not be able to see on this 21-day journey:

God is rewiring the way you think/act/behave.

Rewiring is difficult. It is taking things we have grown accustomed to and changing them. If you’re fasting, spending more time in prayer/study, or implementing new disciplines, don’t be discouraged. Rewiring is not easy but it’s worth it in order to experience a deeper level of growth.

God is at work.

You must believe that God is at work in your life - ALWAYS. He’s always leading, guiding, speaking, directing, revealing. In the midst of this 21-day journey God is at work in your life. If you’re seeing it I hope you’re encouraged. If you’re not seeing it right now please don't give up.

God is honored by your sacrifice.

We don’t have to work or perform our way into God’s love and grace and that’s not what we’re doing when we make commitments like this. We do, however, bring honor to God when we take a step of faith and make an uncomfortable decision to change something in our lives because we desire a deeper level of spiritual growth. Your commitment honors God. God honors steps of faith and obedience.

Keep going strong. If you’ve fallen off from your original commitment don’t beat yourself up, simply pick up where you left off.

Our staff is praying for you by name!

Pastor Matt

A Christian response to the attacks in Paris.

By now I’m sure you’re well aware of the brutal terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris last Friday at the hands of ISIS.

Here’s a few things I’ve been thinking about as I’ve watched the news and heard stories over the past several days.

1) I love what Bob Goff said right after the attacks in Paris. As Christians, we have a hope, an ANCHOR, that is more secure than anything this world can offer. As Christians we mourn the loss of life and the reality of such evil, but we don’t shrink back in fear.

2) In the midst of everything you read and see, PLEASE PLEASE don’t forget that the Christianity that Jesus ushered in is a radically subversive kingdom. That means we don’t necessarily respond as the world responds. We don’t retaliate out of fear or hate or do to our enemies as they do to us. Being a Christian doesn’t mean you're a doormat, but it does mean you respond in a radically subversive way; just like Christ.

Bob Roberts Jr., a pastor in Dallas, and someone called to minister to the Muslims of the Middle East, is reminding believers that how we respond will either validate our message or bring it into question.

3) What I’m about to say will seem incredibly cliche to some but I’m going to say it anyway. The HOPE for the world is not a military action or a political movement or the eradication of a group of people, it is the HOPE that only comes in Christ. Three weeks ago I stood on the front steps of Bethlehem Bible College in the West Bank and watched rioting in the street between Palestinian youth and Israeli soldiers. I watched tear gas fill the streets, chemical spray being shot into homes, and live bullets be shot at twelve and thirteen year olds. I watched a young man right in front of me get shot in the leg (picture below taken with my phone). At the end of that conflict, two teenage Palestinians lost their lives. The conflict I watched that day is very different then the conflict happening in Paris, but I was reminded of the same thing I thought that day. Only the love of God can transform the hearts of people to love where there has only been hate.

Midweek

A time of prayer, worship, and encountering God in a deeper way.

At the beginning of the year we launched something we call MIDWEEK. It takes place the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at Brookside Baptist Church (36th St. & Peoria).

Going all the way back to the beginning of City Church, I believe this is the best decision we've ever made as a church. We've only had two midweek services so far but here's my takeaway:

  1. God wants to move in our lives. He desires to speak, to heal, to transform, and to give us strength for the journey. The questions is this: "Will we make room for God?"
  2. When the people of God gather together with an expectation to encounter God, he shows up.
  3. We are so busy and so consumed by other things, we live our lives mostly unaware of how our soul truly desires times in the presence of God.
  4. To live the life He has called us to live, we must regularly encounter the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. There is no other way.

Our next Midweek will actually be a special Good Friday Service on Friday night, April 3rd at 7pm.

14 Days of Prayer & Fasting: THE STRUGGLE

For me it’s always day 2 or 3 of a fast when I can really begin to feel the struggle.

Can I go ahead and address something about prayer & fasting: It’s not easy and it wasn’t meant to be! There will be a real struggle with your flesh. You are, by the way, giving up something you’ve developed quite the habit of doing and on top of everything else - you enjoy doing this thing.

3 questions you might be asking:

Is God really moving in all of this? When you’re in the middle of a fast it’s hard to see how you not eating lunch or not watching TV or giving up social media has any impact on your spiritual life. Please don’t be deceived into believing that God is not at work in an incredible way.

Why is this such a struggle? Can I encourage you to embrace the reality that prayer and fasting is a messy process? For many of us, we are trying to rewire something that has been hardwired into our behavior. We’re detoxing from things, substances, and habits that have become a part of who we are. Can I also tell you this? I believe the struggle brings glory to God. I believe that he will honor your desperation and hunger for more of him.

Why haven’t I heard or felt God? I remember how much pressure I used to put on myself during fasting. Almost like I was on the clock and if I didn’t get some kind of amazing revelation then the whole process was a waste of time. Here’s the reality: Sometimes God does speak and you do feel his presence in a more tangible way; sometimes you don’t. Remember, we are not led by our emotions or feelings, instead we are led by our faith in Him and our understanding that God WILL pour out his Spirit on those who hunger and thirst after Him.

Keep going strong. I’m praying for you!

Pastor Matt

14 Days of Prayer & Fasting

This Sunday, January 11, we will launch our corporate time of prayer and fasting as a church. We believe there is no better way to start 2015 than giving our best to God. We hope you can go on this journey with us!

The power of fasting is that you sacrifice something you desire and replace it with a desire for more of God. Fasting is not just giving up something, it’s sacrificially replacing that thing with more focused time with God and what he wants to do in your life.

Fasting can include, but is not limited to:

Food:

  • Full Fast: Drink only liquids (if you’ve never attempted a fast don’t start here)
  • Daniel Fast: Eat no meats, no sweets, no breads, or anything artificial. Drink water or juice only. Eat fruits, vegetables or anything naturally grown.

  • Partial Fast: Examples include fasting for lunch or from 6am-3pm daily, etc.

Other things you can fast:

  • Technology
  • Social media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc…
  • TV, Movies, Video Games…
  • Music, iPod, Radio…
  • Cell phone use…
  • Something you regularly desire: Starbucks, Desserts, Sugar…
  • Soda, Alcohol,Sex (1 Cor 7:5), sleeping in…

Scripture References for Fasting: Matthew 6:16-18, Matthew 9:14-15, Luke 18:9-14
